Register.com Web Hosting Review

Register.com Review

Register.com is a decent web hosting solution, but the Essential package just doesn’t measure up to their competitors.
Register.com’s Essential web hosting package comes with the ability to host one site with 5 GB of storage and 250 GB of monthly transfer rate. You have to sign-up for their Premium account to get unlimited storage space and monthly bandwidth. The essential service also comes with a site restore feature, a dedicated IP address, a domain, one email address and overdraft protection should your traffic spike.

Advanced features and more memory seem to cost extra with Register.com. Many of our higher ranked products offer more disk space and more bandwidth with their lower priced packages, and most include more than one email address.
For this review, this web hosting service gave us access to the demo version of their Hosting Essential Solution. This web hosting service offers Pro and Premium versions, as well as Ecommerce versions and website creation packages, such as their Do-it Myself Essential Package for $12.95/month.

Register.com Hosting Package:

As mentioned above, Register.com’s Essential web hosting package is pretty basic, the three-year plan averages out to $8.95/month, the 2-yr $9.95/month and the 1-yr $14.95/month. This includes 5 GB of storage and 250 GB of transfer for 1 website.
The Essential web hosting package comes with very little storage, but you can upgrade. It also comes with website stats provided by Webalizer and AWStats and Fantastico, blog software, YaBB bulletin board, phpMyChat, eight CMS choices and three shopping carts.
In order to get webpage building tools, you have to use something like Dreamweaver, or use an open source program from Fantastico. Register.com does not offer basic page building tools with the Essential package. Register.com does offer website creation packages however.
Register.com guarantees 100% up time, though we are not sure how they can guarantee that, as most web hosting services report something like 99.9% to give themselves a little wiggle room.
As mentioned above the Essential package comes with one POP3 type email account; however, Register.com offers quite a few email packages. This web hosting service has three email packages and offer different scenarios with their ecommerce and web hosting packages. However, we did not see web hosting packages that offer unlimited email storage. From what we can tell, this web hosting service only includes advanced email features with its email packages.

Ease of Use:
Register.com is easy to use sometimes, but difficult and frustrating the rest of the time. It really depends on what you want Register.com to do to your website.

Help & Support:
With Register.com you get one domain or transfer with the Essential package, they offer quite a few types including some international domains such at .UK and .EU. Register.com also lets you support subdomains, purchase additional domains for $35/yr and add domain privacy for $11/month.
Register.com reports to offer 24/7 email, telephone and chat support; however, every time we tried to use the chat service it would not work. We even tried logging in to our account and then clicking the chat link, thinking that it might make a difference, but it did not. We also tried using Register.com’s chat service during “normal” business hours and we got as far as entering our name and email address before the chat conversation terminated; this was extremely frustrating.
This web hosting service posts a few FAQs and through your control panel, you can access a list of help topics, ranging from getting started to CMS help to website stat support. We would have liked to see information that is more thorough though. For example, the FTP support page only had eight support topics and website statistics only seven. However, you can access more answers through Register.com’s online customer support section. This web hosting service also posts video tutorials and a comprehensive glossary that could prove helpful to novice website builders.

Site Creation Tools:
Through Fantastico and Register.com’s software package you can get a few shopping carts including Agora, osCommerce, ClickCartPro, Cube and Zen. However, Register.com offers ecommerce hosting as a different web hosting package at $39.99-199.99/month. Register.com includes things like an online store builder, more email accounts, affiliate program tools and sales and vendor management tools with this package.
Register.com’s Essential package supports PHP, Cron Jobs, FrontPage Extensions, MySQL and PostegreSQL. Register.com enables you to load HTML files created with Dreamweaver or other website creation tool. The Essential package does not include very much transfer, so streaming media would not be a good choice. Register.com allows you to load media files such as video and audio.

Server Access:
Register.com requires that you set up your own FTP service, such as through SmartFTP or CuteFTP. Each hosting packages offers a different number of FTP accounts. Register.com charges $19.95 per month to get your own SSL certification. The services that are easier to use, set up the FTP automatically so you can easily load web pages, files or images to your site effortlessly and quickly. Register.com only gives you one FTP account with their most affordable package, which limits you in terms of who can contribute to your site.

Marketing Tools:
For the astronomical fee of $1050, you could have SEO experts do everything for you, including implementing HTML tags and editing your site content. For the much lower price of $20 per month, Register.com gives you access to this web hosting service’s six essential SEO tools: monthly submission, keyword analysis, meta tag analysis, search engine guidelines, traffic analysis and position check.
All of these tools will help you out greatly, but on top of Register.com’s already semi-steep $8.95 per month hosting fee, you're going to end up paying nearly $30 per month to have a properly marketed, hosted website. Register.com’s SEO services seem to be outstanding, but their prices aren't in line with what budget conscious users can afford. However, if you can afford these services from Register.com, odds are you're going to make your money back and then some if you monetize your website.

Reporting and Statistics:
Register.com is vague when it comes to explaining what they offer in this category.

Summary:
Register.com offers all kinds of hosting packages and ecommerce support solutions, from basic hosting to business email to SEO services. However, we thought Register.com’s basic or Essential package included much less than their competitors did, especially when it came to storage and email accounts. This web hosting service also costs a bit more. Register.com reports to have customer support that stands out and a service team that gives expert advice, but we could never get their chat service to work to test that out.
Overall, Register.com is a decent web hosting service, but just isn’t compelling enough to compare with some of our higher ranked solutions.
